Māori Data Sovereignty: Data access and governance

Overview:

The Māori data sovereignty is about understanding and protecting information or knowledge that is about (or comes from) Māori people, language, culture and resources that are subject to the laws of the place where they are collected and stored. This was articulated in the Treaty of Waitangi and the UN’s Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples, to which Aotearoa New Zealand is a signatory.  

Data Sovereignty is rapidly growing momentum across Aotearoa New Zealand, particularly in the public sector due to the increasing concern among the indigenous Māori people that use of their data by external parties could lead to stigmatisation as well as cultural harm.

This workshop will provide practical guide on how to support the realisation of Māori data sovereignty both governance and operational levels.

The workshop will cover:

• Building frameworks on governance and guardianship of Māori data and how to facilitate its safe and secure access 
• Developing the capacity and capability across the Māori data ecosystem including data rights and interests, data governance and data storage and security
• Using data for research within the frameworks of Māori research ethics
